Starting January 27, sellers that accept Visa and MasterCard will be legally allowed to add a surcharge of up to 4% to your bill if you pay by credit card.

The FCC’s new rule going into effect December 10, 2012 will allow all digital cable companies to scramble local channels and basic cable. That means if you have a TV set, HD or not, that currently does not have a cable box attached, you will have to get one. You’ll get one or two free for a year or two, then you will have to pay a monthly fee. HD boxes are currently about $10 a month. Do you have TVs without cable boxes? Under a settlement with Mastercard and Visa, any seller of goods or services will be allowed to charge customers extra if they pay with ANY credit card (not just Visa/MC). The typical surcharge to cover the merchant’s credit costs is between 2 and 3 percent.
